Acupuncture

Is an ancient system of medicine, that involves the insertion of very fine needles into points on the body.  This is done in order to stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms and restore balance.  Acupuncture is a holistic form of therapy that takes into account each person's unique health and personal history, as well as looking at current symptoms.  A detailed Chinese medical diagnosis is established and an individual treatment plan formulated which may also include dietary and lifestyle advice.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is an alternative medicine recognised by the WHO (World Health Organisation). It that works on the principle that like cures like, so we give a very dilute version of a substance that causes the same symptoms in a healthy person. For example for hay fever we can use a very dilute form of the onion, allium cepa, which in a healthy person causes streaming eyes and nose. This is a common symptom in hay fever and can help to relieve these symptoms. Little sugar pills or liquids are given as either a one off or an ongoing basis to help alleviate the symptoms of conditions like hay fever, asthma, eczema, hormonal imbalances and many others. Please see the website of The Society of Homeopaths

Testimonials

I have found Laura's Acupuncture very beneficial for my health and state of mind.  After each treatment I have seen a noticeable improvement in my symptoms.

Moxibustion

Moxa is a herb, similar to mug-wort that is used to warm  the patient during treatment, it has the effect of increasing the flow of blood and Qi into an area.  It's used either directly or indirectly by placing cones on the skin, on the end of a needle or holding a moxa stick close to the affected area.  Moxa usually has a soothing, calming affect and can help people to feel more nourished and relaxed.  It is usually used as an adjunct treatment to Acupuncture.

Cupping

Cupping involves the placing of glass or plastic cups on the skin after inducing a vacuum.  The cups are then either kept in place, removed quickly or moved about on the skin with the help of massage oil.  The cups have the effect of moving Blood and Qi into the affected area, which can be useful in the treatment of musculo-skeletal problems or colds and flu.

Gua Sha

Gua sha is a technique that involves  the 'scraping' of the skin with a curved plastic tool, this is done to produce tiny red dots called sha.  Gua sha improves micro-circulation and can help to regulate the immune system.  It has been shown to be useful in calming active phase hepatitis.

Auricular Acupuncture

Involves the placing of small, fine needles into acupuncture points located on the ears.  Auricular acupuncture is often used to help with cravings when treating addictions.

Carol Lewis

I had terrible pain in my lower back, which was making my life very difficult.  I visited Laura and within a couple of treatments had started to notice a difference.  My life is back to normal now and my pain is gone but I still go once a month to keep my health in check.
